Day Four: The worst day of the trip. We hope.

Those of us who slept awoke to rain in our damp sleeping bags in the Ruby Mountains in the early morning hours of Day Four. We dressed, packed, and dismantled the tent in a thunderstorm. Good times. Drove into Elko, got breakfast at a charming casino, and set out for Yellowstone, many hours and four states away. What is there to say? It was horrible, start to finish.
It rained all across northern Nevada and through Idaho, Montana and into Wyoming. Brief interlude at an Indian casino where we ate Indian tacos made with bison.
Okay, that was sort of fun.

Got to Yellowstone where it was pouring icy rain and the forecast was for snow. Cabin had no phones or TV and didn't quite meet Jennifer's standards of cleanliness.

We considered leaving in the morning. Bad, bad day.

  2. Rainstorms are in the eye of the beholder. It was a bad day at times, but not bad, bad. We caught sight of the Snake River Canyon -- seemed to have perfectly verticle sides. And as the person who, with some welcome help from Isabel, took down the tent, I would say it was done in moderate, spotty rainfall.
There was real suspense though, at the end of the day, when we wondered whether we'd just up and leave Yellowstone the next day. The forecast was for rain or snow for days to come.
