Day One: Reno is such a classy town

That's our fine Odyssey, and that's our primary driver. Poor men. They now have to help with the dishes and the laundry and the childcare, and yet they still have to do most the driving. Seems like a raw deal.

Leaving after school yesterday, we made good time from Mill Valley to Reno and went straight to our mediocre Basque dinner, which you can read about on Tipsy Baker. See how happy everyone was with Jennifer's choice of a family-style restaurant that serves tongue?

Jennifer enjoyed some picon punch -- a Basque cocktail featuring an orange liquor that tastes like Campari, i.e. bad -- and became quite merry. Mark had a beer. Owen had a glass of Coke with crushed ice and made everyone anxious by playing with his straw. Isabel had water.
As we were exiting the restaurant, Isabel pointed out this sign, one we all found side-splitting:

Maybe you had to be there.

We didn't stay in this particular motel, but in the El Dorado which, even at the shockingly low rate of $41.99/night, had an elevator! and color TVs! As a bonus it was attached to a huge casino where we saw many interesting sights, like the agitated older woman in a cowgirl suit with a wristful of hospital bracelets being escorted somewhere by security guards. Then there was the obese man with white hair who appeared to be in his late 70s holding hands with a young Asian girl. Sweet. Or something.

david used to eat tongue. his mother served it from a can. my famly ate a Boston Brahmin diet. Meat was always a roast and no inside parts or extras like the tongue or the feet were eveer served.
